O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His Name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy Name!
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Proverbs 12:13

Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
    but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

The absence of hope is despair. Where we no longer believe that things will change. We are not dealing with a mere situation but this has become the status quo. We feel trapped. And where we can’t find hope we become resigned. In this place the arrival of hope is unexpected and it is thrilling. The possibility for a better future lifts the spirit, excites the heart and inspires the mind. We begin to enjoy the taste of food again. We notice the goodness and grace in the world. Even when the situation remains the same — all that has changed is hope. This is the fruit of joy and peace that can only come from the Holy Spirit.
