Advent Devotional: Angels From the Realms of Glory

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:

Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ,
the newborn King!

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light;

Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear:

Ezekiel 43:1-5

Then he led me to the gate, the gate facing east. And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the east. And the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory. And the vision I saw was just like the vision that I had seen when he came to destroy the city, and just like the vision that I had seen by the Chebar canal. And I fell on my face. As the glory of the Lord entered the temple by the gate facing east, the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the temple.

John 2:18-22

So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Christmas is a time of year where people feel the benefit of religion. Traditions and rituals that comfort us, connecting us to childhood memories and Church history. There is much to be said for power of these religious observations. Yet we should not forget how revolutionary the incarnation truly is. Jesus becomes the new Temple. He fulfills the law. He substitutes traditions with His very self. Our rituals are only important in so much as they point to Jesus. Religion has been replaced by relationship. Jesus Himself is the Way. Jesus Himself is the truth. Jesus Himself is the life. Let’s enjoy our Christmas traditions but let us cling to the Son of God.

JESUS CHRIST You are the Son of God! May we see You, know You and adore You always!
