Advent Devotional: In The Bleak Mid-Winter

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

Matthew 2:10-11

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Deuteronomy 10:12

And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

At this time of year we rightly concentrate on what has been given to us - Jesus Christ, a gift of grace. But it is also worth asking the questions: What can I give? What is it that God wants of me? What does He require? The simple answer is everything! Though when we look at what that means we see that it begins with our hearts. Firstly, He requires our love and affection. To be consumed with love and passion for Him. He deserves everything, of course, but He knows the only way we will give it all is if He has our hearts first. This is our gift freely offered in worship.

HOLY SPIRIT cause our hearts to be fully surrendered with You! To be besotted by our glorious King!
